IPB University’s ESL Department Discusses Post-Covid-19 Tourism Recovery

Department of Economic Resources and Environment (ESL), Faculty of Economics and Management (FEM) IPB University held ESL Green Talk 14, (4/12). According to the Head of the ESL Department, Dr Ahyar Ismail, this activity is expected to enrich educational institutions and practitioners in the context of post-COVID-19 economic recovery through sustainable tourism.

This ESL Green Talk presented Devi Roza K Kausar, PhD, CHE, Dean of the Faculty of Tourism, Pancasila University, Jakarta. According to him, the very different situation before and during COVID-19 caused a global crisis. Especially now that there is a new variant of Omicron, so many countries have closed their borders again.

“We have to admit that this happened because of the problem of over tourism in various places. Our economy is also dependent on tourism and there is inequality in access to technology and information. So there is a lack of public participation in the Peduli Protect application,” added Devi.

Meanwhile, Dr Meti Ekayani, Secretary of the ESL Department of IPB University added that in developing tourism, don’t just rely on tourism.

“Because if the tourism sector collapses, everything will be difficult. There is a need for career development for youth in the agricultural and trade sectors,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ir Lies Bahunta, MSc, FTrop, President Director of PT Penggaron Sarana Semesta, added that sustainable nature tourism has both internal and external challenges and opportunities.

“One of them is that nature tourism in the forestry sector has a 10 percent chance that it can be built and 90 percent for the environment,” he said.

The next resource person was Lius Lottong, CEO of Situ Gunung Suspension Bridge. He explained that tourism does not die, the market does not die. “The obstacle is how the market comes to our location, this depends on government regulations. The key is how we recognize the concept of market segmentation. What can we take from the market during a pandemic, of course by adjusting government policies,” added Lius. (Ang /Zul) (IAAS/PSA)
