Every year, an estimated 640 ton of used nets enter the sea for several reasons: lost fishing gear, discarded fishing gear (abandoned, lost, discarded), and ghost gear (ALDFG). Small-scale fishermen can potentially become perpetrators & victims of ghost gear without realizing it. This study, funded by CSF Indonesia through the MARINE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM 2021-2022, has revealed that fishermen are facing substantial losses due to the entanglement of fishing gear and ghost gear propellers. The study found that ALDFG can reduce daily fishers’ annual income by 11% and weekly fishermen’s by 1%.
