ESL IPB Successfully Holds Carbon Emission Calculation Training for the FOLU Sector

Bogor, 2 June, 2025 — The Department of Environmental and Resource Economics (ESL) at IPB University has successfully organized a training program titled “EXPLORE: ESL Exhibition Career,” focusing on carbon emission calculation in the Forestry and Other Land Uses (FOLU) sector. The training was conducted in four sessions every Saturday throughout May 2025, in collaboration with the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) and the Energy Transition Academy.

The program aimed to enhance the capacity of youth and stakeholders in tackling climate change challenges, especially in mitigating carbon emissions from the FOLU sector.

Four Thematic Sessions
The first session, held on May 10, 2025, was opened by Dr. Meti Ekayani, who emphasized the importance of collective action and the role of forests as carbon sinks. She highlighted key solutions such as social forestry, mangrove rehabilitation, and forest moratoriums in achieving the FoLU Net Sink 2030 target.

The second session, on May 17, 2025, featured Muhammad Ridwan, Executive Director of PT Cedar Karyatama Lestarindo, who addressed national strategies and international standards such as the IPCC guidelines and SNI 7724:2019 for carbon emission measurement. He also discussed funding sources including the national budget, green sukuk, carbon markets, and international partnerships.

On May 24, 2025, participants engaged in a field practice session guided by Ridwan and his expert team. The session took place at IPB’s Telaga Inspirasi, where participants simulated measurements of tree diameter, height, and biomass, covering above-ground and below-ground components as well as litter and deadwood.

The final session on May 31, 2025, featured Prof. Dr. Ir. Dodik Ridho Nurrochmat, who explained the National Registry System (SRN), carbon trading schemes (ETS and CCTS), and the integration of carbon exchanges into the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) and Indonesia Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (ICDX). He also introduced the role of blockchain and the Carbon Object Selling Value (NJOK) as future innovations in carbon governance.

Capacity Building and High Enthusiasm
Fathur Rahman Faiz, the Event Coordinator, expressed his gratitude to all participants and speakers. “Initially, this training was intended for ESL students only, but due to the high enthusiasm and the value of the material, we opened it to the public,” he said.

A total of 133 participants joined the program, ranging from undergraduate to doctoral students and early-career professionals. Evaluation results showed a significant increase in knowledge, with the average score rising from 65.76% in the pre-test to 89.67% in the post-test.

The event was officially closed by Bahroin Idris Tampubolon, SE, M.Si., Head of the Student Affairs Commission of the ESL Department. In his remarks, he appreciated the enthusiasm of the participants and affirmed ESL IPB’s commitment to continuing similar training initiatives in the future to support climate change mitigation efforts nationwide.
